Imagine a world where we didn’t have access to heaters in the middle of our frigid, Utah winters or air conditioning in those humid days of summer. We’ve become so accustomed to these commodities, but we don’t realize what a luxury it truly is.
As we approach Memorial Day, we are reminded of the men and women who risked their lives fighting for our freedom, without heat or air or even food on numerous occasions. As we recall the conditions these brave men and women endured, we must remember that they are the reason we can enjoy the luxuries our world offers today.
The Evolution of Decoration Day
Before Memorial Day became an official holiday in 1967, it was actually known as “Decoration Day” and commemorated the lives of those who served in the Civil War.
This war claimed more lives than any other U.S. conflict in history and required the U.S. to establish its first cemeteries, which led the friends and families of the deceased to join together and decorate the graves of their loved ones (hence the name decoration day).
This specific day was chosen because it did not conflict with any other battle anniversary and officials thought these soldiers deserved a day solely dedicated to their lives. We happen to agree wholeheartedly.
Remembering Our Armed Forces
Like most of our holidays in the U.S., Memorial Day, as it has come to be known, has changed quite a bit, but still holds the same meaning.
As our history evolved and more conflicts arose, this day began to not only honor those we lost in the Civil War, but honors all of the men and women who have died serving in the United States Armed Forces.
It is because of these men and women that we have the opportunity to live freely in this democratic country. As this holiday has evolved, so has its traditions.
Friends and families still visit the graves of their loved ones, bringing flowers and gifts in their honor, but as we have come to embrace this day as a nation, we now celebrate the lives of those we have lost with parades, concerts, and festivals. It has truly become a day where we mourn the lives that are no longer with us, but we also celebrate the contribution they made to society.
