Like much of Utah, the Spanish Fork area was originally a frequent home to the nomadic Ute people. The first Europeans to explore the Spanish Fork area were Franciscan friars named Silvestre Vélez de Escalante and Francisco Atanasio Domínguez, who passed through in 1776. American settlers began arriving in 1850, and by 1855, Spanish Fork was incorporated as a city.
Icelandic pioneers began appearing around 1860, and Spanish Fork became the first permanent settlement for Icelandic people in the United States. There is a sizable Icelandic population in Spanish Fork to this day, and the city continues to celebrate Iceland Days every June.
Today, Spanish Fork is home to about 35,000 people, and is considered a part of the Provo-Orem Metropolitan Area. Popular events include the Harvest Moon Hurrah, which involves music and craft-making; Fiesta Days, which celebrate the city’s Latin roots; and the Festival of Lights, which illuminates the city during the holiday season. Spanish Fork is adjacent to Utah’s largest freshwater lake, Utah Lake, which offers excellent opportunities for camping, fishing, and boating.
