Next to Colorado and parts of Nevada and Northern California, Utah is the West Coast’s winter wonderland. We get plenty of snow here in the Spanish Fork area, and temperatures routinely dip below freezing during the winter months. All of this means you’ll probably be running your heater at maximum capacity to keep your home warm and cozy. Fortunately, there are simple things you can do to make sure that you aren’t throwing away money on heating bills this winter.
Turn Down the Thermostat
According to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), you can save about 3% on your heating bill for every degree that you set back your thermostat. This means that if you turn down your thermostat by 10 degrees when you go to work and again when you go to bed, you can save about 14% on your heating bill every month. This will be much easier if you install a programmable thermostat.
If you have south-facing windows, open the curtains and shades to allow solar radiation to warm your living space. This will allow your furnace to take a break during the day, which can save you some money on your total winter heating bill. Be sure to close all curtains and blinds at night to prevent the escape of the heat trapped in your home.
Keep Your Furnace in Shape
An inefficient furnace can cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars over the course of its life, which is much more than the cost of hiring a furnace repair company to inspect your heating system at the beginning of the season. Again according to the ACEEE, you can save between 3% and 10% on your heating bills by simply maintaining your heating unit.
